Mumbai: ‘Damage to environment would be irreversible

MUMBAI: Architect Shweta Wagh, one of the respondents in the coastal court case, said that by the time of the next hearing in the Supreme Court in April 2020, irreversible damage to the environment by reclamation would be done.

“Also, against what the BMC has claimed—that there is no fishing activity in the reclamation zone—a study by us shows that fishing occurs in it, the intertidal zone. We hope we were heard at length in the case,” Wagh said. Threatened with a loss of livelihood, 500-odd fishing families from Worli Koliwada were among the first to move court against the project.

We are disappointed that the SC has allowed work to continue till April 2020. Environmental damage would be irreversible... And it is public money that is being spent on this project,” said activist Debi Goenka. Activist Zoru Bhathena said he was “extremely sad” to see that “the very basic precautionary principle of environmental law has been done away with”.

Conservationist Stalin Dayanand said, “Our opposition was to reclamation, which would damage coastal ecology, and cause erosion. By saying that reclamation is allowed but no ancillary developments, it does not take away the issues raised by various petitioners. It is an unjust decision. Mumbai will go on to witness the loss of beaches and increased flooding.”
